How to Save Money with a Pantry

Stocking a pantry is an easy way to save money on your grocery and automotive gas bill. A well stocked pantry saves gas by reducing driving trips to the store, saves shopping time and provides ability to feed your family during a weather or civil emergency. Here are some tips for creating a simple pantry anywhere you have room.

Choose a spot in your home to put up adjustable shelving. Use heavy duty rails with adjustable brackets to support the weight of cans and bottles. The featured shelves are 3/4-inch veneered particle board 24-inches deep. Purchase these supplies at a local home store.

Place 32 quart clear bins on the pantry shelves. They slide out like drawers to easily reach the back of the bin.

Write the expiration date on top of your canned and boxed goods. With perishable food items, always take from the front and stock new purchases from the back to keep food fresh. The featured pantry has bins for fruits, vegetables, rice and pasta, and packaged baking goods and snacks.

Cereal boxes, sugars and other large items like chips store easily in large tubs on the floor. The bins keep the packaged items dry and safe from insects.

Keep a notepad and pen in the pantry to write a list as you go. Taking the last jar of nut butter? Write it down! This way, completing your next grocery list will be a snap.

When you find a sale, buy extra. You can save even more by buying products in bulk as well as saving time and gasoline by reducing trips to the store.

Tips:

Check expiration dates when buying in bulk. Corn chips, for example, have only a few week freshness dates. Only buy what your family can use.

Canned goods are heavy. Make sure you safely install the shelving brackets on a 2x4.
